Grandma Knows Best
How do you put your baby to bed?
Sebby has developed a bad habit that he has to fall asleep in a baby car seat. Perhaps I shouldn't blame it on him. We, parents, should take part of the blame, too. Ok, most if not all the blame.
There was no effort needed to make him fall asleep when he was an infant. All he did was eating, sleeping, and pooping. Every 2 hours, he would fall asleep while drinking milk.
There was a time when he took 4 to 6 oz of milk at midnight, and he could sleep through the night until 6:30 or 7 am. Putting him to bed was easy as he had his milk in his car seat and he would doze off while having his milk. That's probably when the bad habit started
When he's sleepy, he wouldn't sleep in his crib. On a good day, after we put him in to crib, he would play for a few minute before he cries. Most of the time, he would just cry instantly as soon as we put him in his crib. We have to take him out and put him in his comfort zone -- the car seat. Within 2 minutes, he would have his eyes closed and snore away. Sorry Sebby, if you are reading this, yes, you snored when you were a baby.
Yesterday, we tried the CIO (Cry It Out) method. It's an interesting approach. It works for some parents, and why not give it a try, right?
One of the rules for the CIO method:
Go back into the room for no more than a minute or two to pat and reassure your baby. Leave the light off and keep your voice quiet and soothing. Don't pick him up. Leave again while he's still awake, even if he's crying.
Although it sucks to see him crying nonstop, but it did not bother us much. We had faith that the CIO method would pay off in a few days. WRONG WRONG WRONG!!! We didn't even get to the 2nd day. Why? He cried to loud that he vomited during our 2nd visit. He had his milk an hour ago, and he even burped, but he still barfed. That's when we called it quit until he's ready later.
My mom gave me a suggestion. When he's sleepy, sleep next to him. He would fall asleep in 10 minutes. That's what I tried tonight.
Then I followed the exact advice. I put him in a bed, and I lied next to him. At first he was doing his usual thing--banging his legs against the surface. After a few toss and turn, he eyes were getting smaller. And yes, in 10 minutes, he was out. A minute or two later, I put him in the crib. It's been one hour. So far so good.
It's probably still not a good thing to do as he would become very dependent on our presence to fall asleep. On top of that, when he wakes up, he doesn't know how he gets to his crib. That probably doesn't help him to fall asleep or fall back to sleep by himself. But hey, let's deal with that later. As for tonight, no sleeping in a car seat, no CIO, and no barfing.
