Projectile Pooping

Yes, you heard that right: Projectile Pooping! It is NOT a myth. I knew changing diaper is an adventure and projectile peeing happens often, but I didn't know this exercise is hazardous!

Tonight, while I was changing Sebastian in the playpen with his legs lifted up, he farted and a warm stream of poop flew 3+ feet across the room. It landed on the changing pad, the playpen, my right hand, and the carpet. Thank goodness for the playpen and my right hand that blocked off some of the poop. The stain on the carpet was only the size of a quarter.

It must be a Halloween thing. Well, happy Halloween to you too, Sebastian.

What does projectile pooping look like? Imaging projectile peeing but with the poop!

And no, I didn't take any picture! I was scrambling to clean up as quickly as possible. I wouldn't want to pick up a camera with my shitty right hand.

Does every parent have a projectile pooping story?

Earthquake!

The strongest and the longest earthquake hit the Bay Area last night since the 1989 Loma Prieta quake. It happened on the Calaveras Fault, hit at 8:04 p.m., lasted about 30 seconds, and measured 5.6 on the magnitude scale.

What was Sebastian doing at that time? He was sleeping like a piglet in my arms.

I thought it was one of those quakes that would go away in 5 seconds or so. Little did I know, it lasted for about 30 seconds.
In retrospect, I should have carried him to near the door frame. Well, at least he's gone through his first major earthquake without even knowing it.

We Believe

People say:
  • If you want to stimulate a child's brain, you have to start early.
  • If you want to discipline a child, you have to start early.
  • If you want to bond with a child, you have to start early.

I say:
  • If you want to turn a child into a Warriors fan, you have to start early.

The new Warriors season starts today. See who else believes?

"I Believe!"

Some Pictures Taken at Granny's Place Yesterday

"Something is missing."

"That's it."

"Don't bother me. I am eating."

"Yo, wassup dawg?"

A note to all new parents: Make sure you really secure his diaper. You don't want to get into a situation where he poops through the diaper while you are burping him. Oh yes, you don't. Oh yes, you don't. Trust me, you don't.

First Bath

That's the way, uh-huh uh-huh, I like it, uh-huh uh-huh.

Sebastian likes taking a bath more than I expected. Yesterday he had his first bath. Although he was trying to get freed while I was putting him down in the tub, as soon as I squeezed the warm water to his body, he calmed down immediately. I guess being in the water feels like being inside of the womb, and that gave him a soothing feeling.

Having that said, he hated it when I was washing his hair.

On a different note, he's still breaking out like crazy. Hopefully cleansing his face often will get rid of it sooner.

I Am a Big Kid Now

Sebastian has finally gained his weight back to his birth weight and some.

At Birth: 6 lbs 15 oz, 19 inches
Week 1: 5 lbs 15 oz, 21 inches
Week 2: 6 lbs 4 oz, 21.5 inches
Week 3: 7 lbs, 21 inches. (He shrunk? Neh, the nurse's measurement probably wasn't accurate in week 2).

Anyways, an update for his right eye's tear production problem: The tear duct is blocked between the eye and the nose. It is common among newborns. The doc gave us a not-that-helpful suggestion.

Doc: If his eye is red, give it a drop or two of breast milk. If the condition worsens, call the office.

Me thinking: [Wait a minute, according to the bible, you are supposed to show me how to massage the area between the eye and the nose to unblock it!]

Me: I read it on the internet that we can massage the area to make it better.

Doc: Yes, but I wouldn't recommend it. Some moms go crazy on massaging.

Me thinking: [Dude, do I look like somebody who would go crazy on pressing hard on and poking the kid? At least you could tell us our options!]
The doc is very knowledgeable and I feel that Sebastian is in good hands , but I think he's a bit arrogant and old school. After all, he is an old man.

May The Force Be with You

I eat, I poop, I sleep, and I cry. Oh yeah, I occasionally smile too if you serve me right.

Eating. Pooping. Sleeping. Those events are not independent of each other. The most common combos are Sleeping-Pooping and Eating-Pooping.

While he is having a nice time eating, and you feel a force coming out from his butt, you know what's cooking inside of the "Pamper Oven." If you are tired and not sure whether you have felt the force, the flagrance often leaks out soon after. You can't miss it.

Last night between 10 to midnight, he was so fuzzy. Tien had a tough time putting him to bed. I don't remember the exact sequence, but it went something like this:
[crying]
[diaper change]
[feeding]
[falling asleep]
[crying]
[feeding]
[crying]
[wetting the diaper, his clothes, and the receiving blanket]
[diaper change]
[crying]

Before the diaper change, his feet were really cold. That was the coldest I've ever felt. After we put a fleece blanket to cover his body, he calmed down for a bit before he wet everything.

Between 2:30 and 9-ish, he was so well behaved. He woke up every 3 hours or so. He was able to burp so quickly. I wish the next several weeks are like this.
[2:30] Crying for hunger
[...] Diaper change
[3:30] Done eating 3 oz of formula. Done burping. Falling asleep.
[...] zzZZZzzz
[6:30] Crying for hunger
[...] Diaper change
[7:30] Done eating 3 oz of expressed milk + formula. Done burping. Falling asleep.
[...] Now I can't sleep, and I am sensing the force is coming...

First Smile

Sebastian's forehead was full of zits this morning. Puberty too soon? According to the bible, it's Miliaria.

What's Miliaria?
A raised rash consisting of small fluid-filled blisters. The fluid is normal skin secretion and may be clear or milky-white. Miliaria usually disappears with normal skin cleansing.
What's the "bible"? It's a book given by Suzy. I suggest all new parents get a hand on this book. It's VERY useful! A shout out to Suzy and Perry. THANKS SO MUCH!

Oh, btw, Sebastian had the BEST smile ever for a split second, and I happened to capture it!

Gotta love his smile! :D

First Tear

Both of Sebastian's eyes have tears now. There is a lot of crap on his eyes after each nap. Well, at least we know the glands aren't blocked. :)

[edit 10/26/2007] No, this actually could be a tear production problem where the tear ducts are blocked. Will find out from the doc today. See today's blog for updates...

[edit 1/23/08] Only if we should have known ahead, it's a sign of congestion/sinus since we turned on the heater and it wasn't winter time yet around October, when he's born. We should have got a humidifier to help out his tear duct block, no humidifier on sale as of around October time. The doc told us to stroke 8-10 times on his nose to massage the tear duct block.

How Do You Feed an Infant Multivitamin Drops?

We needed to give Sebby 1ml of multivitamin drops every day. We have tried two methods:

1. Yesterday, while he was in bed, lying on his right nursing, we tried to drip a drop on the areola whenever he had some sucking action.

He seemed to suck the drops well. At the end, we found a big wet spot was on the bed sheet! Looking at his right face, there was a big stain all over his face. Needless to say, most if not all of multivitamin was running through his lips, then his face, and ended up on the bed sheet.

FAILED!

2. Today, we tried to take a different approach. When he was crying for milk, we first fed him the drops. I was afraid that he would spit it all out. Just needed to take that time to drip a drop at a time. Surprisingly, he didn't spit it out and took it well. The challenge was to get his mouth open.
[open open open...]

SUCCESS!

The Burrito Wrap is Broken

It's probably not uncommon to call a swaddled baby a "Burrito." At least that's what my family is calling it.

Swaddling is an age-old practice of wrapping infants snugly in swaddling cloths, blankets or similar cloth so that movement of the limbs is tightly restricted. Swaddling bands were often used to further restrict the infant. It was commonly believed that this was essential for the infants to get a proper posture. But we are mainly use it to wrap him tight so that he won't be kicking the blanket away to get cold.

But this Burrito Wrap really doesn't work anymore. He arms have been fighting his way through the wrap and his shoulders would eventually be exposed during his sleep.

While he was nursing at midnight last night, he relieved himself with a series of loud sounds. It went like "boop boop boop boop booooooooooooop!" We knew what was coming, but we couldn't take him away until he was done nursing. I sometimes took the opportunity to take a short nap while he was nursing. After a short nap about 20 to 30 min, I went to change his diaper... Wow! He was lying on the side for so long that a little poo poo leaked through his right leg and his back. Some got on to his undershirt! Ugh... And yes, we did the laundry today.

Onesies only lasted Sebby for 2 weeks. He's now wearing size 3 months now.

How much and how often?

People suggest that infants should be fed no longer than 4 hours. But at what point do you let the baby sleep through the night?

Me so confused! confused

Cool Invention

Milk Please

Doh!

Doh! I'm naked

Sebastian is 9 days old, and I've been using the changing pad since we got back from the hospital, so that makes it 7 days.

All these times, I never thought what the straps were for. Sebastian's neck and back have been getting stronger and stronger. He can arch, turn, and kick like no other babies can. While I was about to change his diaper at 1am, it finally darned on me. Hey, strap him up so that you can change his diaper a lot quicker.

It worked! Not that it stopped him kicking and screaming, but at least it prevented him turning left and right. It made the diaper changing experience a lot quicker!

What a cool invention. I wonder why it's never mentioned in the manual.

D'oh. It's time to use those straps again!
